The United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification is a group dedicated to combating desertification worldwide, focusing on raising awareness and laying the groundwork for future generations to combat desertification. While the UNCCD is a global, it still provides a solution for desertification in the Middle East.
In order to be effectively solving the problem of desertification the UNCCD must fulfill the following criteria. They are:
In order to be effectively solving the problem of desertification the UNCCD must fulfill the following criteria. They are:
- The UNCCD must stop desertification in the Middle Eastern region and prevent its recurrence
- The UNCCD must successfully reverse the effects of desertification in the region.
One of the most notable things to raise awareness is the World Day to Combat Desertification (WDCD), which took place on 13/10/14. The WDCD had the objectives of raising awareness to the negative effects on land and soil due to climate change, mobilizing support for sustainable land management and showing the significance of land and soil in food security and adding them into climate change policies. The report "The UNCCD: Laying the Groundwork for future security" documents the plans for the UNCCD's solution partnering with other groups and governments, and the work that th ey will do to kick start the solution for other groups and governments. The UNCCD plans to form an Intergovernmental Working Group through synergies with other conventions which help with combating climate change and desertification. By combating desertification and having better management of land, all land uses will be benefited, including food, water and energy, essentials to our lives. As a group, the UNCCD have limited capacity in comparison to governments, and so, in order to increase knowledge and technology, the UNCCD must use/ do the following:
By doing these the UNCCD helps other groups and governments solve the problem by providing support, increasing knowledge and increasing technology. For this to be most effective, all groups and governments focused towards areas that encompass desertification should play their part, and also requires major financing.
The UNCCD's solution meets the first criteria by preventing desertification and preventing reoccurrence of desertification, but fails to meet the second criteria of reversing desertification.
- Monitor and Report desertification in order to increase understanding and react to the problem.
- Increase the capacity of government action by using help form the people to allow for changes in policies in national and regional governments.
- Increase cooperation between nations and regions
- The 3rd Science Conference in order to work with scientists to solve the problem.
