How Desertification can be Prevented
Desertification is mostly caused through the misuse of land, for example, irresponsible farming of land. Being mostly caused by humans, the effects of desertification can only be prevented and reversed by humans.
To completely prevent desertification farmers with arid land must be very careful in how they graze, grow crops in and irrigate their land. One of the most effective strategies used is the holistic management approach, which is discussed below.
In order to prevent desertification the mindsets of people must be changed to realise the effect desertification has, and also have the incentive to help the cause. This can be achieved by groups and governments raising awareness and changing major policies, as well as providing incentive.
How Desertification can be Stopped from Reoccurring
After desertification has been prevented, in order to maintain a state where no deserts are forming or expanding, action must be taken to help prevent desertification from reoccurring. If not, the current state of mind that no action is needed will be reverted, and desertification will reoccur.
To stop desertification one of the most effective strategies is the use of the holistic management approach.
To prevent this, there must be incentives and policies by groups and governments to maintain the mindset of people, and make them be more careful when using the land. This will prevent misuse and the reoccurrence of desertification
How Desertification's Effects can be Reversed
Reversing the effects of desertification must be done to achieve the goal of restoring parts of the biosphere and lithosphere, and to rebuild ecosystems that have been lost dues to desertification and to also allow the regeneration of fertile farmlands.
There are a few strategies used to reverse the effects of desertification. One of the main strategies used is the holistic management approach.
This approach involves grazing a huge amount of grazing animals, like sheep or cattle, in a huge area, the animals must be herded around the land so that they are moving constantly mobile and not just eating everything in one area. What this does is flatten the long grass, as the animals walk over it, protecting the soil from direct exposure to the sun and then the animals manure the land with their faeces, which then gives the essential nutrients to the soil do it can become fertile again. As the animals move around they will not eat all the grass so that there is a lot of land cover and it can effectively make a huge amount of land fertile in a short amount of time. This can be seen in the picture below. Though it is not of the Middle East it still shows the affect and high quality results of the holistic management approach.

The reason of why overgrazing will we explained in the video below. The video highlights and explains the holistic management approach and why it is the most effective solution so far.
The main group that works on desertification in the Middle East is the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and is an international intergovernmental group that focuses to eradicate desertification. One of main Middle Eastern countries that is affected by desertification is Egypt as it is partially overtaken by the world's largest desert, the Sahara Desert, and has extremely hot weather that can further increase the rate of desertification. In Egypt the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency (EEAA), which is a government body, is in charge of all Egypt's environmental issues. Both the UNCCD's and EEAA's actions will be analysed and evaluated.
